Creative Multi-Island Kitchen Expansion – New Canaan, CT
By KLAFFStyle Editorial Staff
Thomas D’Acunto of D’Acunto Construction LLC was working with a growing young family in New Canaan to give them a reimagined kitchen that would provide greater function and an improved overall family and entertaining space. He called in KLAFFS to serve as his kitchen design partner.
Kitchen designer Nick Geragi successfully tackled a number of design challenges, typical when renovating existing spaces. Chief among these was opening up the kitchen to the family room by taking down a long wall that could have housed both base and wall cabinets.
This meant picking up storage elsewhere. He accomplished this using three islands. Two parallel islands for prep and clean-up feature 2” thick Calcutta Gold Marble countertops that make a true design statement. The third provides a divider between the family room and kitchen and serves as a buffet and breakfast bar. Nick also used toe-kick drawers that look like baseboard, but hide clever additional storage at floor level.
The cabinetry is ergonomic. The cabinets are drawers that pull out rather than swing out. This changes the direction of the hardware. Many of the drawers feature side, as well as top, access.
Geragi replaced a 48” refrigerator-freezer with an individual refrigerator and freezer, each 30” wide, separated by a tall pantry, thus picking up an additional foot of refrigeration. All of these are integrated into the design by panels that match the cabinetry.
“This was an interesting project in many ways,” he said. “First of all, the husband and father of the family was very involved in product selection. He saw a vignette in our showroom using our private label KLAFFS Signature cabinetry with the Hampton door style and loved it. It has 1” doors, walnut drawers and mortised hinges that offer a tight reveal; that is, you see very little of them. Though the kitchen is white and bright and airy, it has a masculine flavor that works well in the large, open space.
“We broke up the all-white design with touches of dark wood, including an open recess in the refrigerator/pantry wall, a molding beneath the farm sink, and the breakfast bar is custom walnut and wenge butcher block, 2 ¾” thick with a custom edge to match the cabinet door style. The floors in both rooms are knotty oak. The counter top for the cooking range area is leathered Lagos limestone.
“The backsplash is simple 2” x 7” white subway tile. We created crown moldings to match the family room’s coffered ceilings. The design made use of an existing kitchen triple bay window for eat-in purposes.
“We worked with the family on this project for two years. No, it didn’t take nearly that long to plan and implement. When we were almost finished with the design phase, the family learned that its newest member was on the way, and we tabled the project. When the baby was born and things settled down, we picked it up again. We have a family that’s thrilled to have its new baby – and its new kitchen!”
